Award-winning NetOne Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) Engineer Raphael Mushanawani believes the future of telcos is about participation, not consumption.
The GCEO revealed this in an exclusive interview after emerging victorious as platinum winner at a recent ceremony which acknowledged Zimbabwe’s best perfoming CEOs.The Platinum Winner GCEO said,
“Emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, cloud computing are reshaping economies. Zimbabwe must be an active participant.”
His leadership advice to the youth was also direct. “Dream boldly, work diligently, remain committed to excellence. Do not be discouraged by challenges. Every obstacle presents an opportunity to learn and grow.” Most importantly: “Leadership is about service.”
According to Mushanawani, the most rewarding part of his journey was generational impact. “There is great fulfilment in knowing that decisions we make today can create opportunities for future generations. Whether through connectivity, innovation, or institutional transformation.”
Engineer Mushanawani rejected the idea that telcos is just about networks. “Telecommunications is not merely about connectivity; it is about creating opportunities, unlocking potential, and enabling inclusive growth.” That mindset drove NetOne’s recent transformation.
Mushanawani defined success by legacy, not titles. “It is about the institutions we strengthen, the opportunities we create, the people we empower, and the legacy we leave behind.” Financials enable, but impact proves success.
Mushanawani wants NetOne remembered for nation-building. “If future generations can say NetOne helped connect communities, unlock opportunities, support economic growth, and improve lives, then I will consider that meaningful.”
On recognition, the engineer stays grounded. “While the award bears my name, it is recognition of an institution that has embraced innovation, resilience, and transformation in pursuit of national development.”
He closed with a call to purpose. “Ultimately, leadership is not about positions or awards. It is about the impact we leave behind and the value we create for society.”
