The Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) has graduated 170 Data Protection Officers, bringing the total number of certified DPOs in Zimbabwe to over 700. The ceremony was a testimony to country’s efforts to create a safer digital environment and promote trust in the use of information and communication technologies.
The graduates were trained in collaboration with the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) and equipped with critical competencies to execute data protection practices. According to Prof Eng Quinton Chamunorwa Kanhukamwe, Vice Chancellor of HIT, the partnership with POTRAZ is crucial in Zimbabwe’s journey towards having a nation with secure personal data.
The new DPOs are expected to play a key role in building digital trust and promoting innovation in the country’s rapidly evolving tech landscape. With the increasing use of artificial intelligence, big data analytics, and other emerging technologies, the demand for skilled data protection professionals is on the rise.
As guardians of digital trust, the graduates are tasked with ensuring that data is protected and used ethically. They will work to build systems that are smart, fair, and transparent, and lead organizations that comply with data protection regulations while earning the trust of the public.
The graduation ceremony highlights Zimbabwe’s commitment to promoting digital innovation and protecting citizens’ rights in the digital age.
