Zimpost Introduces Smartphones on Credit for $5 Per Week

Zimpost has launched an affordable smartphone credit scheme that allows Zimbabweans to own gadgets for just $5 per week. The initiative was announced by the Postmaster General of Zimpost, Mr. Maxwell Chitendeni, during the official opening of the Mawabeni Digital Centre in Matabeleland South.
The event was presided over by the Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services, and was held in partnership with the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ).
Mr. Chitendeni explained that the facility will be accessed through Zimpost’s mobile app, where customers can connect with vendors and make weekly payments until they fully own their devices. “We are making it possible for people to access gadgets through our app for as little as $5 a week. This means anyone can connect with a vendor and gradually own a better gadget,” he said.
He noted that the program is already being embraced in schools and universities, where parents see it as a convenient way to provide their children with the right tools for digital learning. “This is an easy way of making sure that learners have access to the right gadgets,” said Mr. Chitendeni.
The Postmaster General also emphasized that the initiative supports the government’s drive for digital inclusion. “We are fulfilling the President’s vision, which is to ensure that no one is left behind as the country advances technologically. Everyone must be included,” he said.
The Mawabeni Digital Centre is part of a broader national strategy to bridge the digital divide, expand ICT access in rural and underserved areas, and create equal opportunities through technology. With support from POTRAZ and government, Zimpost aims to empower citizens by making smartphones and digital services more affordable and accessible across Zimbabwe.
