The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) and the South Africa Information Regulator have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen cooperation in data protection. The MOU signing ceremony, held at POTRAZ headquarters in Harare today marking the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship between the two institutions.
“We are truly honoured by your presence today. Your visit has not only brightened our halls but also brought warmth to this winter month—a welcome contrast to the cold air outside,” said Dr. G.K. Machengete, POTRAZ Director-General.
The MOU aims to strengthen regulatory capacity in data protection, harmonize safeguards for cross-border data flows, improve business efficiency through clear frameworks, and build trust in the digital economy. “In this rapidly evolving digital era, data protection is not just a technical concern—it is a fundamental right,” emphasized Dr. Machengete.
“We remain committed to principles of lawfulness, fairness, transparency, and accountability. We also recognise the broader role of data governance in the success of the African Continental Free Trade Area,” he added.
The MOU is a concrete response to the call for stronger cooperation across the Southern African region, as directed by Ministers in March 2025. “Today’s MoU is a concrete response to that call,” said Dr. Machengete.
With up to 20,000 daily border crossings and remittances exceeding USD 800 million annually between Zimbabwe and South Africa, the partnership is expected to enhance public trust in the digital economy and support the success of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
