HIT Launches Musiyamwa App to Formalize Zimbabwe’s Informal Economy

The Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) recently unveiled a groundbreaking platform aimed at integrating Zimbabwe’s informal sector into the mainstream economy. The Musiyamwa App, launched at the HIT Technovation Expo 2025, targets small and medium enterprises (SMEs) by providing tools to streamline financial management, inventory tracking, and tax compliance.

Developed by LADS Africa, a software startup operating under HIT, Musiyamwa offers a mobile point-of-sale (POS) system that enables SMEs to capture transactions, issue receipts, manage expenses, and monitor inventory. The app’s backend can be accessed remotely, allowing business owners to track profits, identify losses, and manage stock from any location with internet access.

“Zimbabwe’s economy is largely informal, with 90% of the population employed in the informal sector and over 60% of economic activity occurring outside formal channels,” said Engineer Tererai Maposa, Director of LADS Africa.

“Musiyamwa addresses the challenges SMEs face, such as chaotic stock management and difficulty tracking transactions, by providing a comprehensive accounting solution. The app also simplifies tax compliance through ‘soft fiscalisation’ with the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA).”

The app is compatible with smartphones, dedicated POS devices, and all-in-one tills. The platform can accomodate up to 10 users per business and be used across five branches making it suitable for growing SMEs.It is priced at a modest $5 per month providing an affordable solution for business digitization.

In addition to financial management, Musiyamwa links SMEs to microfinance organizations, enabling access to loans based on transaction histories and business performance data – a critical step for many small businesses that struggle to secure financing.
