SADC partners have nominated Zimbabwe to lead data protection capacity building efforts in the region. ICT Minister Tatenda Mavetera welcomed this development, emphasizing the importance of regional cooperation in ensuring secure cross-border data flows.Minister Mavetera revealed this at the National Data Privacy Symposium held recently at the Holiday Inn in the City of Kings, Bulawayo.

The minister noted that data protection is a critical component of Zimbabwe’s digital economy plans. She emphasized that the country is prioritizing data protection through the Cyber and Data Protection Act.

Mavetera emphasized that data protection is essential for promoting trust in digital services. She urged stakeholders to prioritize data protection in their operations. She said,
“Recognising that regional coordination is essential, I am proud to announce that our SADC partners have nominated Zimbabwe to be a torchbearer for data protection capacity building.”

The Youthful Minister added,
“Moving forward, we must all adopt a “privacy-first” philosophy in every new initiative. As Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella reminds us, “We ensure that the user is always in control of their data and its use.”
Let us approach this challenge believing, as Marie Wallace once noted, that “How we approach privacy will have the single greatest impact on our future society.” By placing privacy at our core, we can build a safe, thriving, and truly inclusive digital economy for all.
