Zim Top ICT Delegates, StartUps Attend ITU in Korea

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Secretary General, Houlin Zhao yesterday met up with top Zimbabwean ICT  delegates during the ongoing international convention.

Zimbabwean top ICT delegation led by the minister  of ICT Postal and Courier services Hon Supa Mandiwanzira, Ministry of ICTPS officials, Potraz Director General Dr Gift Machengete, Communication service providers and young Zimbabwean startups are currently attending the prestigious International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Telecom World 2017 event in Busan, South Korea.

The Zimbabwean delegation is attending the 41st ITU Telecoms World event, having once hosted the event in 1990. The ITU Telecoms Word started in 1971 and became an annual event in 2011 and is running from the 25th of September to the 28th. The ITU Telecom World 2017 promises to bring smart technologies together with smart ideas and smart people to make the world better, sooner by maximising opportunities from the ongoing digital transformation.

There are a lot of changes happening in the telecommunications sector that has seen a decline in voice, SMS and other traditionally high revenue streams. Yesterday TelOne Zimbabwe announced intentions to increase their market share to 25% and having launched two new products, their intended growth objectives can be improved with the adoption of some of the lessons the Zimbabwe delegation will bring home with them from Korea.

The event is a great opportunity for Zimbabwe as the Zimbabwean delegates get to see how advancing other countries are getting by exploring new frontiers of communication. With many world leaders in the ICT sector present, the event gives an opportunity for the delegates to network, share ideas and strike up deals that may help Zimbabwe in the future.

This year hasn’t been great on all fronts in the telecoms sector having seen Samsung and Huawei Zimbabwe divisions pack their bags and leave the country, due to tough economic conditions, but there is need for the telecommunication industry in Zimbabwe to keep on moving and growing despite the many challenges the industry faces.

There has been a lot of improvement in the Telecommunication sector in Zimbabwe, but there is still room for more improvement to meet the standards of 1st world countries and attending events like these maybe the first step for Zimbabwe.

Among the key sessions and topics discussed in Korea are the transformation of the ICT sector, the shaping of smart industries and impact of digital transformation on individuals, citizens and societies.

The country will wait to see what the minister and his team will bring back to Zimbabwe.
