OpenAI has introduced a major update to ChatGPT’s image generation capabilities, giving users new ways to create, edit and share digital images. The new ChatGPT Images 2.5 was introduced in September 2026 and focuses on producing sharper images, improving editing accuracy and making image generation faster.
One of the most notable additions is Sketch, a feature that allows users to draw an idea directly inside ChatGPT and then describe what they want the final image to look like. This could be particularly useful for people who have an idea in their mind but find it difficult to explain it using words alone.
ChatGPT Images 2.5 also introduces templates designed to make image creation easier. Users can select a template for popular formats such as flyers and product images and then customise it with their own information, pictures and design ideas.
Another improvement is the ability to make more precise edits. Instead of asking the AI to recreate an entire picture, users can tell ChatGPT to change a particular part while keeping the rest of the image intact. OpenAI says the system is better at maintaining important details through several rounds of editing.
The company has also improved the quality of images generated from reference photographs. People, objects and other subjects are more likely to retain their recognisable characteristics when users ask ChatGPT to place them in a different environment or visual style.
Speed has also received attention. OpenAI says image generation latency has been reduced by up to 50 percent compared with its previous Images 2.0 system, allowing users to experiment with ideas and make changes more quickly.
The update could have an impact on students, designers, businesses, social media creators and ordinary users who want to produce visual content without needing advanced graphic-design skills. A small business owner, for example, could use ChatGPT to develop a promotional flyer, while a student could create illustrations to support a school project.
