Starlink, is expanding rapidly across Africa, with Zimbabwe quickly closing the distance on early market leader Nigeria. While Nigeria established a strong initial lead following its January 2023 rollout, official regulatory reports reveal that Zimbabwe has experienced a much faster initial adoption rate since its official launch in the third quarter of 2024.

Data from the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) track a dramatic shift in subscriber adoption across both nations. Nigeria built an early lead after its 2023 launch, expanding to 65,564 active subscribers by late 2024 and steadily climbing toward 98,642 subscribers by mid-2026.

However, Zimbabwe demonstrated an exceptionally steep trajectory. Starting from near zero upon its official authorization in Q3 2024, Zimbabwe reached 40,146 users by mid-2025, expanded to 67,057 by late 2025, and surged to 86,488 active subscribers by Q1 2026.

Driven by intense consumer demand, Zimbabwe achieved this expansion in just seven quarters, narrowing the subscriber gap with Nigeria to under 13,000 users over a much shorter operational window.

Zimbabwe’s rapid uptake reflects high demand for fast, reliable internet outside traditional terrestrial networks. Direct satellite connectivity has provided households, remote businesses, and rural communities with high-speed broadband in areas where local fiber and mobile infrastructure faced coverage or speed limitations.

While Nigeria remains a vital hub for SpaceX in West Africa, Zimbabwe’s swift rise highlights how quickly satellite technology can transform connectivity in southern Africa, setting a new benchmark for rapid digital adoption on the continent.
