Rwanda has taken a bold leap into the future of transport by unveiling Africa’s first self-flying electric air taxi, marking a historic milestone in the continent’s aviation and urban mobility sector.

The unmanned aircraft, equipped with advanced navigation technology, successfully took to the skies in Kigali, symbolizing Rwanda’s commitment to pioneering smart and sustainable transport solutions. President Paul Kagame attended the launch, which positions Rwanda at the forefront of air mobility innovation in Africa.

“This is more than just a demonstration. It is a glimpse into how Rwanda envisions its cities and economy connected, efficient, and sustainable,” said Rwanda’s Minister of Infrastructure, Jimmy Gasore.

He explained that the electric air taxis offer a practical answer to growing traffic congestion by cutting commuting times from hours to minutes. “With the ability to bypass clogged roads and connect key points quickly, this technology promises to ease pressure on ground transport and improve urban mobility,” he added.

The breakthrough project is a partnership between the Government of Rwanda, the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), and urban air mobility technology company EHang. CRBC’s Director General in Rwanda, Huang Qilin, praised the collaboration as proof of their commitment to introducing cutting-edge solutions to Africa.

The launch builds on Rwanda’s track record as a technology leader, having been one of the first countries to deploy drone delivery for medical supplies. Gasore noted that the government has already invested in charging infrastructure and policy frameworks to support wider e-mobility, including electric buses and motorcycles currently reshaping city transport.

Analysts say the air taxi debut not only cements Rwanda’s reputation as an innovation hub but also signals how African cities can leapfrog traditional transport challenges through technology-driven solutions.
