Registrations Open for Zimbabwe’s 1.5 Million Coders Initiative

Registrations have officially opened for Zimbabwe’s 1.5 Million Coders Initiative, a government-backed digital skills programme designed to equip citizens with critical technology competencies. Interested participants can register and access the free learning modules directly on the official portal www.zimdigitalskills.ac.zw

The programme, run by the Ministry of ICT, Postal and Courier Services in collaboration with other ministries, will train Zimbabweans in programming fundamentals, artificial intelligence basics, Android Kotlin development, and data science fundamentals.The initiative is meant to equip young people with tools to innovate, create tech-driven businesses, and compete in the digital economy.

According to ICT Minister, Honorable Tatenda Mavetera the project is anchored in Zimbabwe’s National Digital Skills Strategy, which seeks to integrate digital education from primary school through tertiary level, while also creating pathways for lifelong learning in communities.

Government is also working with international partners, including the United Arab Emirates, which is supporting the initiative through its Government Experience Exchange Program. This collaboration is part of the country’s efforts to tap into global expertise as it accelerates adoption of emerging technologies.

Authorities say training 1.5 million coders will not only strengthen the country’s innovation ecosystem but also help reduce unemployment by opening opportunities in software development, data analysis, and digital entrepreneurship. The programme is being described as a “game changer” for Zimbabwe’s journey towards a knowledge-based economy.
