Zimbabwe Internet Governance Forum To Tackle Social Media

This year’s edition of the Zimbabwe Internet Governance Forum (ZIGF) to be held at Zimbali Lodge tomorrow will look into options of ensuring a bright digital future for Zimbabweans.

The event will see ICT professionals discussing the future of ICTs in Zimbabwe with much focus biased towards the internet.

“ZIGF 2017 will address questions relating to social media, cyber security, the data economy, sustainable development, human rights on the internet, as well as the influence of digitization on our economy, the media landscape and the political system,” said Potraz in a statement.

ICT and Cyber Security Permanent Secretary Eng Sam Kundishora will officiate the forum themed ‘Shaping and Securing Zimbabwe’s digital future.’

Other speakers at the event include Dr Gilford Hapanyengwi who is the chairperson of ZIGF-MCT.

This forum will come in handy at a time when Zimbabweans recently faced an internet blackout. Further, the forum comes at the back of the launch of Zimbabwe’s Internet Exchange Point.

Some of the issues to be discussed is the pending Cybersecurity and Electronic Transactions Bills. The rise of Fake news propagated via social media outlets such as WhatsApp and Facebook has destroyed the work ethics for traditional media while manipulating the public.

This event, hopefully, will sit on this fake news phenomenon.
