Zim To Boost Cyber Defenses, Prioritizes Fraud Prevention

Zimbabwe is taking steps to bolster its cyber defenses and prioritize fraud prevention, recognizing the critical importance of a secure digital landscape in today’s rapidly evolving technological environment.

Deputy Minister for Information Communication Technologies, Postal and Courier Services, Dingimuzi Phuti emphasized the need for Zimbabwe to boost Cyber defenses and prioritizes fraud prevention while giving a keynote address at the Cyber Fraud and Al Summit 2025 which is being hosted by MorniPac Consultants, kick-started today in Nyanga under the theme,” Bridging the gap in Cyber, Al and Financial lnvestigations”.

 “There is need for robust cyber security and fraud prevention by strengthening national systems to detect, prevent, and respond to cyber fraud is crucial, this can be achieved through measures like multi-factor authentication, encryption, and regular security audits, empowering institutions like the Zimbabwe Computer Incident Response Team (ZCIRT) to lead response efforts is crucial.

Expanding broadband access, especially in rural areas, is vital, Initiatives like deploying optic fiber and promoting infrastructure sharing policies can help achieve this goal and providing digital skills training for citizens of all ages will enable them to effectively utilize digital technologies and stable electricity and alternative power”.o

Phuti emphasized the importance of digital centers, stating, “Establish digital centers in community locations, such as post offices, where citizens can access digital services, training, and resources. These centers can also sell smartphones and other digital devices in affordable installments.”

He further highlighted the need for policy, legislation, and governance, stating, “Finalize and implement policies and bills governing AI, data protection, e-transactions, cyber law, and child online safety. Establish oversight bodies, AI ethics committees, and multi-stakeholder advisory groups to ensure responsible digital development.”

Phuti also stressed the importance of digital literacy and capacity building, saying, “Teach digital skills in schools, colleges, and universities, and provide training programs for citizens of all ages.” This includes initiatives like digital skills training for youth, older adults, and community-based initiatives.
