As Cybersecurity Awareness Month in October comes to an end, authorities and digital security experts are reminding Zimbabweans that protecting their personal accounts is an ongoing necessity.

Recent weeks saw a surge in WhatsApp account takeovers across the nation, leaving individuals and businesses vulnerable to financial fraud and identity theft.

While Cybersecurity Month raises vital awareness, WhatsApp security is a daily priority. To stay protected, users should implement essential security safeguards:

  • Enable Two-Step Verification: Add a personal 6-digit PIN and a secure recovery email by navigating to Settings > Account > Two-Step Verification. This prevents unauthorized access even if someone obtains your registration code.
  • Never Share Verification Codes: One-time PINs (OTPs) and SMS registration codes should remain strictly confidential. Scammers often pose as friends or support agents to trick users into sharing these codes.
  •  Audit Linked Devices: Regularly check active WhatsApp Web and desktop sessions under Settings > Linked Devices and immediately log out of any unfamiliar devices.
  • Secure the App and Device: Utilize device biometrics (fingerprint or Face ID) or strong passcodes to lock both your smartphone and WhatsApp.
  • Beware of Social Engineering: Avoid clicking suspicious links, fake investment offers, or unverified requests for money. Always confirm financial requests through a direct phone call.
  • Watch for SIM Swaps: Immediately report any unexpected loss of mobile network service to your operator to prevent SIM-hijacking attempts.

If your account is compromised, act swiftly by re-registering your phone number on WhatsApp, removing unauthorized linked devices, alerting your contacts, and reporting the fraud to authorities.

By practicing continuous digital vigilance, users can ensure their personal conversations and business transactions remain safe year-round.
