Hon. Tatenda A. Mavetera, Zimbabwe’s ICT Minister, was elected Chairperson of the Council of Ministers in charge of ICT (CMICT).CMICT stands for *Council of Ministers in charge of ICT*, an African intergovernmental body that brings together ministers responsible for Information and Communications Technology (ICT) from member states.
The CMICT’s main functions are:
1. *Setting regional ICT policy direction* – guiding Africa’s digital agenda and priorities.
2. *Coordinating ICT initiatives* – harmonizing digital projects and strategies among member states.
3. *Promoting digital transformation* – driving innovation, infrastructure development, and access to ICT services to boost economic growth, entrepreneurship, and citizen empowerment.
4. *Strengthening partnerships* – fostering collaboration between governments, private sector, and organizations like Smart Africa to advance shared digital goals and deliver tangible benefits to communities.
The election occurred at the Eighth Session of CMICT held on March 24, 2026.
Smart Africa’s Director General/CEO, Lacina Koné, sent a congratulatory letter to Minister Mavetera on March 27, 2026.
“The election signals a strong and well‑balanced Bureau to drive Africa’s digital momentum” noted Koné.
The appointment highlights Zimbabwe’s leadership in Africa’s digital agenda and ICT development.
Smart Africa pledged to support Mavetera in coordinating Member States and implementing shared digital priorities.
The initiative aims to translate collective ambition into tangible benefits for citizens, entrepreneurs, and communities.
Koné emphasized a pragmatic partnership to position CMICT as a driving force for digital transformation.
The new chairmanship will focus on strengthening alliances and advancing Africa’s ICT vision.
Zimbabwe’s role in CMICT is expected to boost regional digital growth and cooperation.
As the newly elected CMICT biggest boss, Chairperson Minister Mavetera will unify Africa’s ICT efforts, accelerate digital development, and turn policy ambitions into real impact for citizens and businesses across the continent.
