Mobile phone users should brace for tough times ahead as operators announce tariff hikes

Local mobile phone users should brace for tough times ahead after the biggest local service provider Econet Wireless announced an imminent tariff upward review with effect from 10 December 2020.

The last tariff upward review was witnessed almost three months ago.

In a notice to its subscribers on Tuesday, Econet said they are to effect a review in tariffs.

“Please note we will review our Voice & SMS bundles effective Thursday 10 December 2020.”

“To access Voice & Data Bunes dial $143# ,To access SMS bundles dial *140#.”

The increase in tariff was long over due considering the time frame the MNO took effect new prices.

Current effective tariffs cost ZWL$0.1070 per second for voice , ZWL$1.2656 per MB , while SMS are pegged at ZWL$1.6491 per SMS.

Over the past months mobile network operators have been increasing charges to meet operational costs against inflation.

Meanwhile , Econet is looking to engage authorities for permission to take payments in foreign currency for some of its products.
