Microsoft Teams Classic will be permanently shut down tomorrow, exactly one year after reaching its official end-of-life (EOL) status.
This mandatory transition means that the old application will cease to function entirely, with no active servers for video calls or other features, effectively rendering it useless for users who have not yet migrated to the new Teams app.
The move comes after a phased migration approach initiated by Microsoft following the preview release of the new Teams version in March 2023.
While support for Teams Classic officially ended on July 1, 2024, allowing users to continue using the application without further updates, the impending shutdown on July 1, 2025, eliminates that option.
Organizations and individual users who have held onto the classic version, often due to initial bugs and issues with the new app, now face a strict deadline.
Microsoft has stated that the EOL date carries more weight than any lingering bugs, as Teams Classic will no longer receive crucial security updates, posing a risk to organizations.
To ensure uninterrupted communication and collaboration, users are required to switch to the new Teams application.
Sysadmins can proactively manage this transition by utilizing policies in the Teams Admin Center to disable classic Teams default mode and enable new Teams only mode.
Microsoft has been issuing in-app notifications since March of last year, informing users about the impending deprecation of the classic version, aiming to ensure that the shutdown does not come as a surprise to regular users of the video conferencing tool.
Microsoft has also announced that no changes will be observed for those who have already made the switch.
