The #AIAfrica2025 Summit kicked off with an address from Hon. Tatenda Mavetera, Minister of Information Communication Technologies, Postal and Courier services who proclaimed that Africa’s moment in the AI (Artificial lntelligence) spotlight has finally arrived. Drawing parallels between the mighty Zambezi River and Artificial Intelligence, Minister Mavetera emphasizing the transformative potential of AI in reshaping the continent’s future.
The Minister highlighted the potential of AI in driving development through “leapfrogging” traditional stages of growth. Climate-resilient farming, healthcare, and education were cited as key areas where AI can make a significant impact. “AI should create Africa’s opportunities, not take Africa’s jobs,” Minister Mavetera emphasized, underscoring the need for a human-centered approach to AI development.
With a focus on self-determination, Zimbabwe’s leadership outlined a bold vision for Africa’s AI destiny. “Rejecting passivity” was the call to action, with a commitment to building domestic capacity and avoiding digital dependency. This approach is expected to empower African nations to take control of their technological future.
The summit also saw several key announcements,! including the launch of Phase 2 of the High-Performance Computing (HPC) Centre by President ED Mnangagwa. The National AI Strategy is set to be launched in October 2025, outlining Zimbabwe’s roadmap for AI development.
One of the most exciting initiatives unveiled was the 1.5 Million Coders Program, aimed at equipping Zimbabweans with the skills needed to thrive in an AI-driven economy. This ambitious program is expected to drive innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth.
