By Zimbabwe war veterans association chairman Christopher Mutsvangwa has burst the bubble of many corporates claiming it was through his intelligence that Zimbabweans got to sample the first mobile telephone handset.
Contrary to popular belief that Zimbabwe’s largest network company by subscriber base Econet Wireless ushered mobile handsets into the nation, the war veterans leader argues otherwise.
“Im the one who brought cellphones in Zimbabwe not Econet,” he said at the on-going press conference on the President Mugabe’s ‘coup’.
A lot of theories have propped up as to who brought the first cellphone into the country. A popular folk story of Econet founder Strive Masiyiwa leaving the then Cafter failing to convince them in adopting the mobile telephone.
In the Masiyiwa’s chronicles to ascendency, the business tycoon was inspired by the marvel of the mobile phone while in UK which forced him to form his company Econet even after the government denied him an operating license.
With Econet having been denied the license to operate a mobile telecommunications company, state controlled NetOne clinched the deal.
