OneMoney and ZimSmart Villages issued bicycles to village health workers under Mudhumeni WeHutano on Monday 20 July 2026 at Kakora Village, Chiweshe. The telcos partnered with health workers to close the mobility gap between homes and clinics for elderly, expectant mothers, and chronic patients by equipping workers with transport to deliver screening, follow-ups, and health education door-to-door.
The most underrated piece of health tech in Chiweshe this week wasn’t a sensor — it was a bicycle. OneMoney’s donation under Mudhumeni WeHutano gives village health workers wheels to shrink the distance between diagnosis and care.
In rural Zimbabwe, the “last mile” is often 10–30km of footpath. For elderly patients or those with uncontrolled glucose, that’s a barrier to survival. The bikes turn health workers into mobile nodes, carrying BP machines and glucometers to homesteads for scheduled checks and urgent referrals.
NetOne’s Spokesperson, PR Manager Ernest Magadzire framed it as infrastructure: “We are taking healthcare and financial inclusion closer to the people.” The bikes reduce response times, increase visit frequency, and cut patient transport costs — a hidden tax on rural health.
Each bicycle effectively expands the service radius of Maria Theresa Hospital without building new clinics. When combined with digital diagnostics, the model mirrors “community IoT” — human-powered sensors moving through a mesh of households, collecting vitals and health data.
Village Head Kakora said the bikes “brought healthcare closer to our homes,” enabling regular monitoring for at-risk groups. The initiative is championed by First Lady Dr. Auxillia Mnangagwa and supports President Mnangagwa’s Vision 2030.
It’s a reminder: in rural digital transformation, pedal power plus sensors can be as disruptive as 5G.
