The Zimbabwe Electric Vehicles Association (ZEVA) was officially launched today, Thursday, 5 November 2026, at the Cresta Oasis Hotel in Harare, marking a major milestone as the country’s first national body representing the full electric mobility value chain.

The landmark event brought together competitors across Zimbabwe’s electric vehicle ecosystem including EV dealers like BYD, Beyond Mobility, and Satewave, alongside e-bike operators, charging providers, battery specialists, and Zimpost, uniting them under a single initiative.

Rather than operating in isolation, these key players will be collaborating on critical infrastructure and safety priorities: establishing a unified national charging standard, strategically placing charging stations, regulating the quality of imported batteries, and upskilling local EV technicians.

Academic institutions such as the University of Zimbabwe and the Harare Institute of Technology were core participants, alongside strong support from government and regulatory bodies.

Speaking during the event, Zimpost Postmaster General Mr. Maxwell Chitendeni praised the launch of ZEVA as a vital step to ensure Zimbabwe is an active participant in innovation rather than a passive observer.

He noted that the introduction of electric vehicles will lower operating and maintenance costs, reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports, create strong synergies with renewable energy, and yield significant environmental benefits.

Emphasizing the broader scope of the initiative, Mr. Chitendeni highlighted its importance for “the movement of goods across the country,” adding that it “resonates well with our president’s mantra where we say we must leave no one and no place behind.”

He further noted, “ZEVA should therefore become a platform for dialogue, for coordination, knowledge sharing, advocacy, and the development of practical solutions that accelerate the adoption of electric mobility in Zimbabwe.”

ZEVA’s core vision is to accelerate the safe, sustainable, innovative, and inclusive adoption of electric vehicles and clean transport solutions throughout the country.

The official launch featured several key highlights:

  • The formal public unveiling of the association.
  • A cross-collaboration initiative connecting distributors, assemblers, charging providers, battery suppliers, financiers, and fleet operators.
  • The official announcement of a National E-Mobility Awareness Campaign.
  • An outline of ZEVA’s 2027 operational programme, which includes policy dialogues, EV technician and rider safety training, university upskilling programs, and public awareness roadshows.

As Zimbabwe’s national representative body for electric mobility, ZEVA aims to promote collaboration, policy development, technical standards, innovation, investment, skills development, and consumer confidence across the sector.
