Zambia has launched its largest solar power plant, the 100-megawatt Chisamba plant, marking a significant milestone in the country’s renewable energy development, located in Chisamba, the plant is expected to power around 90,000 households and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 150,000 tons annually.
The $100 million project positions Zambia as home to the fifth-largest single solar power initiative in Africa and the third-largest in sub-Saharan Africa. The plant will enhance energy security, support economic growth, and promote environmental sustainability.
Compared to other major African solar projects, Chisamba’s cost per megawatt is competitive, and its economic returns are promising. The project is expected to generate significant social and environmental benefits and attract further investment in large-scale solar initiatives in Zambia.
The launch of the Chisamba solar power plant demonstrates Zambia’s commitment to renewable energy and its potential to become a key player in the regional renewable energy landscape.
