University of Zimbabwe’s 44th graduation ceremony has been called a sham as President Mnangagwa who is also the Chancellor of all state universities today presides over the event.
3674 graduates are female while 3244 are male meaning 53% of the graduates are female.5949 undergraduate , 938 postgraduate degrees will be conferred, totalling 6918 graduates overally.29 Graduates attain their Doctor of Philosophy with only two attaining Master of Philosophy.
Commentators have declared today’s graduation a sham coming after High Court Judge President Mary Zimba-Dube dismissed the urgent court application by the Association of University Teachers (AUT) to interdict and stop the University of Zimbabwe (UZ)’s graduation ceremony.
The judge presided and dismissed the application, saying the case is now moot citing issues presented are no longer relevant or a live controversy exists for a court to resolve.
Moot cases happen when the situation that prompted the lawsuit has changed, making a court’s decision ineffective or irrelevant and lack practical impact on the parties involved.
Zimba-Dube presided over the matter from midday yesterday and deferred it last evening for judgement.
In light of this, the UZ graduation is waiting for its Chancellor, President Mnangagwa to preside over it with all guests currently sitted as initially planned.
The Association of University Teachers wanted the UZ’s 44th graduation not to go ahead because of academic fraud, corrupt practices and many irregularities associated with the hiring of unqualified part-time lecturers, sub-standard teaching methods, examination moderation and dissertation supervision, complaining about other malpractices in the education training processes at the country’s top-notch institution of higher learning since professional and permanent lecturers went on strike on 16 April over poor working conditions and low salaries.
The judge decided not to inconvenience the graduates regardless of circumstances.
