The recent Midlands State University (MSU) Alumni Reunion and Business Expo has set a new benchmark for institutional collaboration in Zimbabwe. Central to this new vision is a landmark pledge: the alumni association has committed to opening pathways for student attachments, job placements, and mentorship programs.
A defining feature of the event was the remarkable alignment between the Global Alumni Steering Committee, the University’s executive leadership, and the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education.
Dr. Prosper Mutswiri the Global Alumni Steering Committee president echoed the core sentiments of MSU Vice Chancellor Professor Victor Muzvidziwa and Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation Science and Technology Development, Hon. F. M. Shava, signalling a unified front to transform the university into a global powerhouse. This is to ensure that the next generation of graduates is seamlessly integrated into the global workforce.
While the echoes of the inaugural Midlands State University (MSU) Alumni Reunion and Business Expo have faded from the halls of the Gweru campus, the strategic blueprint laid out during the event is only just beginning to take shape. Several addresses made during the event continue to resonate across Zimbabwe’s academic and corporate sectors
This commitment served as the strategic heartbeat of the MSU Alumni Reunion and Business Expo. Dr. Prosper Mutswiri, President of the Global Alumni Interim Steering Committee, emphasised that for an institution to thrive, its seasoned professionals must reach back to pull the next generation forward. By leveraging their positions in various industries, alumni are creating a direct pipeline from the lecture hall to the boardroom.
Professor Muzvidziwa challenged the over 90,000 alumni to become strategic partners by offering internship placements and seminars, noting that vision without action is vanity. Dr. Mutswiri reinforced this, promising that the alumni will mentor students and open pathways for attachment effectively turning the university’s intellectual output into a practical encyclopaedia of ideas for the industrial sector.
Dr. Mutswiri’s address focused on converting alumni pride into tangible national value. The establishment of global chapters and a dedicated alumni fund are not merely administrative goals but tools to facilitate this new era of support.
“Today is therefore not a reunion in the ordinary sense. It is a declaration… that Midlands State University matters to Zimbabwe,” Dr. Mutswiri remarked, highlighting that the future of the university rests on deliberate investment and loyal action.
Minister Shava invited alumni to support the university’s future growth plans, specifically citing the need for state-of-the-art laboratories, libraries, and innovation hubs across all campuses.
Dr. Mutswiri’s speech acted as the alumni’s formal acceptance of this challenge. He pledged that the association would support infrastructure development and strengthen the alumni fund.
Addressing the professional responsibility of graduates, the Global Alumni Interim Steering Committee president redefined patriotism as a commitment to excellence and institution-building. He challenged the alumni to view mentorship and job placement not just as charity, but as a form of national duty.
“Patriotism is service. Patriotism is competence… Patriotism is refusing decay where one has the power to build,” he stated.
The relevance of this initiative continues to grow as the association strengthens its digital portal to connect mentors with students. By facilitating attachments and career guidance, the alumni are ensuring that the MSU brand remains synonymous with high-caliber, industry-ready talent.
