ICT, Postal and Courier Services Minister Tatenda Mavetera says Zimbabwe stands to benefit from 100 Google scholarships and AI capacity building programmes following engagements in New York.
Minister Mavetera was speaking after President Emmerson Mnangagwa met Google Senior Vice President for Research, Technology and Society, James Manyika, on the sidelines of UNGA 81.
“We are very grateful that we’re having a conversation on how we can advance our digital landscape as a country, and looking at how we can also tap into what Google is offering, especially the 100 scholarships, looking at the capacity building AI training that they are also offering,” Minister Mavetera said.
“We are grateful that there is need for us to really look into our technology park which now we’ve got the land which has been secured and we see how we can also partner with Google.”
The minister presented Zimbabwe’s efforts to digitally include everyone with focus to bridging the rural-urban divide, expanding broadband, and lowering barriers to digital literacy under theNDS2 and Vision 2030.
“We have connected over 10,000 remote sites, expanded beyond 17,000 km of fibre, licensed satellite providers like Starlink, rolled out free Wi-Fi through the Presidential Internet Scheme, turned post offices into Digital Centres,” said the minister
The government ministry promised to trains 1.5 million citizens through the Digital Ambassadors and self taught portals especially women, youth and persons with disabilities.
The Minister said Zimbabwe launched its National AI Strategy in March and is also working on AI tailored for local needs.
