The UNDP has officially opened calls for applications for the MineTech Innovation Challenge Zimbabwe 2026, establishing a direct bridge between young local tech talent and the evolving needs of the nation’s mining sector.
Operating under the theme “Innovate. Digitize. Transform,” the national initiative invites Zimbabwean individuals and multidisciplinary teams under 35 spanning university students, academic researchers, start-ups, entrepreneurs, and community innovators to pitch technology-driven solutions for the industry.
For young creators, the challenge functions as an acceleration pipeline designed to bridge the gap between ideation and market deployment.
Shortlisted participants gain access to technical guidance, solution validation, and structured mentorship from technology and industrial experts.
Beyond competition, the program provides a venue for early-stage teams to refine their prototypes, connect with corporate partners, and access incubation pathways and potential investment networks.
For Zimbabwe’s mining sector, a key driver of economic output and foreign exchange, the challenge introduces a mechanism to resolve persistent operational hurdles through local innovation. The competition targets functional applications across key areas, including artificial intelligence for hazard prevention, Internet of Things (IoT) sensors for environmental monitoring, automated safety systems, and digital tools for mineral traceability.
Importantly, the initiative encourages solutions tailored to both large-scale commercial operations and artisanal or small-scale miners (ASM). Integrating these technologies aims to reduce workplace accidents, minimize environmental degradation, and boost overall resource efficiency across the value chain.
As global mineral markets increasingly prioritize sustainability and digital compliance, embedding locally built technology into mining operations offers a practical route toward modernization.
Eligible innovators under 35 can submit their proposals online through the official portal ahead of the October 2 cutoff
