Chipinge District today is hosting the annual International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) commemorations, highlighted by the official commissioning of Ndau FM community radio station and a UNESCO solar kiosk.
Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly and UNESCO, IDUAI is observed globally to promote access to information as a fundamental human right crucial for transparency, public participation, and community empowerment.
The annual event emphasizes providing local populations with the tools and platforms needed to seek, receive, and impart information.
The festivities take place at Garahwa Business Centre in Chipinge District’s Ward 28. Key proceedings include a ministerial tour of exhibition stands, official certificate presentations for local trainees, and the handover of community donations. Sunrise Sign Language Academy is providing language interpretation services to maintain accessibility throughout the program.
Minister for Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Hon. Dr. Zhemu Soda serves as the guest of honor to deliver the keynote address. He is joined by Deputy Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services Hon. Dingumuzi Phuti, and Information Deputy Minister Hon. Dr. Marupi. Key stakeholders, including UNESCO Regional Director Ai Martiale Zebaze Kana, traditional leader Chief Garawa, the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ), and the Media Alliance of Zimbabwe, are also participating.
The commissioning of Ndau FM marks a vital step in advancing Zimbabwe’s community broadcasting drive. Supported by green solar energy from the newly installed kiosk, Ndau FM provides the local Ndau-speaking community with a dedicated platform to access information in their primary language, bridging the rural digital divide and fostering local development.
