Southern Africa Broadcasters Set to Harness AI for Media Transformation

0

Artificial intelligence (AI) will dominate discussions in Victoria Falls from 28-30 October as broadcasters from across the region gather for the Broadcasters Convention Southern Africa 2025, exploring how technology can revolutionise the way news, entertainment, and public information are produced and delivered.

Hosted by the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation in partnership with the Broadcasting Media Alliance and the Southern African Broadcasting Association, the convention runs under the theme “Content, Connectivity, Collaboration Transforming Africa’s Broadcast Media Landscape in the AI Era.”

AI tools are already reshaping the sector, from automated editing and real-time translation to algorithms that analyse audience behaviour and tailor programming to specific viewer preferences. Experts say these innovations can boost efficiency, expand reach, and open new revenue streams, but challenges remain, especially in closing the connectivity gap that leaves millions without access to reliable digital platforms.

The gathering will also focus on strengthening cross-border collaboration, fostering innovation, and ensuring Africa’s broadcast content reflects the region’s cultural identity while embracing new technologies. Organisers say this blend of tradition and innovation could position Southern Africa as a leader in the continent’s next media transformation wave.
