Google has begun rolling out an AI-driven Sensitive Content Warning feature on Android devices that automatically blurs suspected nude images in Google Messages, aiming to protect teen users from explicit content.
The new tool, part of the SafetyCore suite on Android 9 and above, scans images directly on the device, obscuring those flagged as containing nudity before they appear on screen. It also issues a warning when such images are sent, received, or forwarded, without uploading them to Google’s servers.
“All detection and blurring happens on the device. This feature doesn’t send detected nude images to Google,” the company said in a Help Center post.

For teens aged 13–17, the feature is automatically turned on and can only be managed by parents via the Google Family Link app. Adults can opt in or disable it through Google Messages settings under Protection & Safety. However, for supervised accounts, disabling is not possible without parental consent.
Cybersecurity experts say AI filters like this have grown more accurate, but challenges remain. Patrick Moynihan, president of Tracer Labs, said modern systems better detect explicit content with fewer errors, yet “edge cases like artistic nudity or memes can still trigger false flags.” He added that combining AI with human oversight is key to reducing blind spots.
Compared to Apple’s iOS safeguards, Android’s open nature allows for greater flexibility, but also increases the risk of minors encountering unfiltered material. Tatiana Jordan of Bark Technologies warned that the blur feature alone is not enough, noting that “kids can unblur it instantly” and stressing the need for parental conversations around consent and online safety.
Google’s rollout follows increasing pressure on tech companies to better protect minors online. By defaulting the feature on for younger users and making it easy for adults to opt out, the company hopes to strike a balance between safety, privacy, and user control.
