By The aspiration of Zimbabwean students to pursue higher education in the United States is on a steady climb, as revealed by the 2024 Open Doors Report from the Institute of International Education.
The report shows an impressive 6.6% increase in enrollment from the 2022-2023 academic year, with 1,907 Zimbabwean students currently studying in the U.S.
“This growth underscores the deep-seated ambition among Zimbabwean students to seek quality education and expand their global perspectives,” said an EducationUSA advisor based in Harare. “It also highlights the strong partnership between Zimbabwe and the United States.”
The United States remains one of the top three global destinations for Zimbabwean students, following South Africa and the United Kingdom. The report reveals that undergraduate students make up 49% of the total enrollment, graduate students account for 32%, 18% are engaged in Optional Practical Training (OPT), and 1% are part of non-degree programs. Notably, the number of graduate students surged by 15% compared to the previous year, showcasing an increased interest in advanced studies.
The pathway to studying in the U.S. has been paved by various scholarships—academic, athletic, and creative—that open doors for Zimbabwean students. In addition, EducationUSA, a U.S. Embassy initiative that marks 25 years of service this year, plays a pivotal role by offering guidance to students through its advisors stationed in Harare, Gweru, Mutare, and Bulawayo. The program also provides Opportunity Funds to high-achieving, low-income students to support application and travel expenses.
“The availability of scholarships and dedicated advising services ensures that talented Zimbabwean students can access opportunities that were once beyond their reach,” said a U.S. Embassy spokesperson.
Beyond university enrollment, the U.S. Embassy in Zimbabwe facilitates numerous exchange programs, enabling over 100 Zimbabweans to participate in fully funded academic and professional exchanges in the past year alone. These initiatives reflect the United States’ commitment to fostering international student mobility and empowering Zimbabwe’s academic and professional growth.
The U.S. Department of State and the Department of Education jointly celebrate the 25th annual International Education Week from November 18-22, 2024. The week’s theme underlines international education’s role in diplomacy, innovation, economic development, and security. The Joint Statement of Principles in Support of International Education reinforces these ideals, marking the unwavering commitment to global educational collaboration.
“Education is at the heart of international relations and shared progress,” noted a U.S. Department of Education representative. “Zimbabwe’s increasing engagement in U.S. educational institutions is a testament to the mutual benefits of such partnerships.”
