NetOne says its first-Friday monthly clean-up is not a once-off campaign but a long-term commitment to environmental sustainability, running nationwide to 2030 and beyond.

Speaking to TechnoMag during today’s 3 July clean-up, NetOne Spokesperson, PR Manager Ernest Magadzire was represented by Thamsanqa Luphahla who said the telco is aligning with His Excellency’s call for monthly clean-ups because “this is the environment where we operate from and this is the environment where we want to leave our children.”

Magadzire said:

“Making sure that we make the right decisions now creates that future that we want for our children and the nation as well.”

*National, Not Just Harare*
Luphahla confirmed the exercise happens every first Friday of the month across the country. Today’s sites included Harare, Chitungwiza, Bindura, Masvingo and Hwange.

“We do not only do it here in Harare, this is a national drive because we need to also make sure that we touch all the places,” he said.

*Partnerships and Mandate*
NetOne has partnered with the Environmental Management Agency for over 2-3 years, and with city councils in Harare and other cities. The initiative started in 2021.

Luphahla said NetOne’s thrust is to “create a sustainable Zimbabwe” and position itself as more than a telco.

“As NetOne, we are not just a telco but we are also a sustainable partner for the government of Zimbabwe. We are looking forward to going into every city and every village. This is an ongoing process.”

*Beyond 2030*
Marking 30 years as a telecommunications company, Magadzire said NetOne is intensifying community programmes in environment and education.

“We have always been in the community. But we are intensifying that right now… When we come back maybe in 2030, we will still be doing this. Because this is not just for me to participate but this is for making sure that our environment is as clean as possible.”
