By The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) will conduct a public hearing to solicit input from telecommunications industry stakeholders and the general public on proposed new interconnection rates for network operators in the country.
The regulator says the current rate of TZS 26.96 for voice call termination rates per minute will expire on 31 December 2017.
James Kilaba, Director General of TCRA says the public hearing will be held tomorrow at the TCRA head office in Dar es Salaam from 9am.
The proposed rates that are set to kick off on the first day of the new year will see a reduction of the voice call termination rate per minute to TZS 15.60 for 2018. TCRA makes further proposals for this rate be reduced further to TZS 10.40 on the first day of January 2019, and then even further to TZS 5.20 in 2020. The proposed rates for 2021 and 2022 are TZS 2.60 and TZS 2.00 respectively.
According to TCRA’s quarterly statistics released in September, total traffic measured in minutes for the country during Q3 totalled 14,933,886,483 minutes across all local networks and on international calls.
TCRA says all seven local operators, namely Airtel, Smart, Halotel, Tigo, TTCL, Vodacom, and Zantel will be affected by the proposed termination rates.
Tanzania, together with Nigeria and South Africa have taken steps to reduce charges for handling calls from other network providers in a bid to lower costs for consumers and spark competition.
