Zimbabwe Records 5% Surge in Mobile Voice Traffic in Q1 2025

0

Zimbabwe’s mobile voice traffic rose by 5% in the first quarter of 2025, reaching a total of 4.20 billion minutes, up from 3.98 billion minutes recorded in the previous quarter. This increase signals continued growth in demand for voice communication services, despite the global trend shifting toward data-driven communication.

The latest figures released by the POTRAZ sector report show that NetOne, the second-largest operator, registered the highest growth among the three major Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), with traffic rising by 12.26% to 507.5 million minutes from 452 million registered in the forth quarter of 2024.

Econet maintained its dominance in the market, recording 3.69 billion minutes in Q1 2025—an increase of only 4.52% from the previousy recorded 3.5 billion minutes.

In stark contrast, Telecel experienced a significant drop in traffic volumes, plunging by 43.28% to just 947,186 minutes from 1.6 million minutes. This steep decline raises questions about the operator’s market performance and customer retention efforts during the review period.

The overall growth in voice traffic underscores the continued relevance of traditional mobile communication services in Zimbabwe’s telecoms landscape, even as digital transformation accelerates across the sector.
