Econet Wireless Zimbabwe Leads Listed Companies In Renewable Energy Use With 3.3 Million kWh

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has emerged as the biggest user of renewable electricity among the country’s listed companies, consuming 3,315,815 kWh in the 2025 financial year, according to data from FY2025 financial reports.

The telecoms giant topped the list of 10 listed companies that disclosed their renewable energy usage. However, renewables accounted for 8% of Econet’s total electricity consumption.

The ranking was compiled by @DailyViz263 from company annual reports for FY2025.

Top 10 Renewable Energy Users
1. Econet Wireless Zimbabwe: 3,315,815 kWh – 8%
2. Tanganda Tea Company: 1,813,970 kWh – 20%
3. Padenga Holdings: 1,338,430 kWh – 2%
4. Ariston Holdings: 727,350 kWh – 37%
5. CBZ Holdings: 465,647 kWh – 17%
6. Edgars Stores: 415,689 kWh – 32%
7. ProPlastics: 312,577 kWh – 9%
8. Meikles Limited: 310,000 kWh – 1%
9. First Mutual Holdings: 156,549 kWh – 13%
10. Hippo Valley Estates: 66,833 kWh – 1%

Agriculture And Retail Push Green Agenda
While Econet Wireless used the most renewable electricity in absolute terms, Ariston led on percentage share at 37%, followed by Edgars at 32% and Tanganda at 20%.

The data shows agriculture and retail companies are making significant strides in shifting to solar and other renewables, likely to cut costs amid power cuts and high tariffs.

Analysts say the numbers reflect a growing trend among Zimbabwean corporates to invest in solar plants, solar water heating and other clean energy solutions to power operations.

Econet’s Broader Energy Play
Beyond consumption, Econet is also active in the energy sector through Distributed Power Africa, its renewable energy company that provides solar solutions to businesses and homes across the region. This positions the group as both a major user and enabler of clean energy in Zimbabwe.
