Econet Wireless subscribers can now make high-definition video calls directly from their smartphone’s built-in dialer, completely bypassing the need for WhatsApp, Wi-Fi, or expensive mobile data bundles.

Powered by the network’s newly rolled out Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology, the hidden feature allows users to place live video calls using standard airtime, offering a seamless, app-free alternative when internet access runs dry.

It functions precisely like a standard voice call, but with live video.

For the feature to work seamlessly, three key conditions must be met, callers must be Econet on both sides as the feature is currently restricted to Econet-to-Econet calls, it can also only be done on an Android smartphone, testing confirms it does not currently support iPhones and VoLTE must be switched on for both participating phones.

How to Switch on VoLTE

  1. Open Settings on your phone.
  2. Go to Mobile networks. On Samsung devices, navigate to Settings → Connections → Mobile networks.
  3. Turn on VoLTE calls (some devices label this option as “4G calling” or “Enhanced 4G LTE mode”).

Note: Menu names vary across brands. If you cannot locate it immediately, search “VoLTE” directly in your settings search bar.

How to Make the Video Call

  1. Open your normal Phone app.
  2. Dial the target Econet number.
  3. Tap the video call button, or alternatively, initiate a standard voice call and switch over to video as soon as the connection establishes.

This capability changes mobile communication dynamics. Only the caller incurs charges, meaning the recipient does not need airtime or data to answer, and both parties can remain completely offline.

It provides a reliable alternative when internet bundles run out, and offers an accessible platform for older family members who struggle with third-party applications.

While Econet has yet to release official standalone rates for VoLTE video calls, some regional precedents price them equally to standard voice calls. If mirrored locally, calls would cost roughly 4 cents per minute, undercutting WhatsApp video calls on daily bundles, which average 6 cents a minute due to high data consumption.

However, limitations remain, the service is strictly on-net for Econet, excludes iOS devices entirely, and requires a stable 4G connection, dropping the video feed if the device reverts to 3G.
