Econet to Revamp SmartBiz Plans Amid Fair Usage Policy Backlash

By Ross Moyo

Following a wave of customer complaints over throttled internet speeds, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has announced plans to revamp its SmartBiz data packages to offer broader and more flexible options.

Users of the “unlimited” SmartBiz plans reported that speeds dropped below 1Mbps — making even basic online tasks difficult — with some saying regular Econet bundles performed better once throttling took effect. Several customers claimed that the SmartBiz 5 package, initially advertised as offering 1TB at 5Mbps, was now being throttled after only 200GB, without prior notification.

The SmartBiz service has been widely adopted by small businesses, schools, churches, freelancers, and home users due to its affordability and promise of unlimited data. However, the recent throttling concerns have sparked debate over Econet’s Fair Usage Policy (FUP) and whether “unlimited” data truly exists.

In a statement, Econet acknowledged the feedback, emphasising that its FUP aligns with international standards, where unlimited seldom means truly infinite.

“To better serve you, we are introducing new, broader data packages that offer more choice, allowing you to select the option that best suits your needs — whether personal, educational, or business,” the company said.
“These packages are designed to deliver a consistent digital experience for all our customers, while safeguarding the long-term sustainability of our services.”

Econet reaffirmed its commitment to customer satisfaction, saying:
“At Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, your connectivity experience is our top priority. We listen to your feedback, monitor market trends, and embrace new technology to ensure our services meet your needs.”

The company is expected to unveil the revamped SmartBiz packages in the coming weeks, aiming to strike a balance between affordability, reliability, and sustainable network performance.
