Zimbabwe’s Immigration Department has introduced e-gates and an online border management system at the Beitbridge Border Post to enhance security and efficiency, Assistant Regional Immigration Officer Lucky Joe Matyora has said.

Speaking to the parliamentarians in Beitbridge yesterday Matyora said that the new system reduces human interaction and rent-seeking assistant

“We are also working with other border agencies to tighten security through the use of CCTVs and drones,” Matyora said, adding that they’ve been able to detect and weed out undesirable persons at the border and its flanks.

Through collaboration with other border agencies, they’ve managed to reduce the smuggling of unaccompanied minors. In 2023, they intercepted over 300 minors, and last year, they intercepted 149 minors being smuggled through Beitbridge Border Post.

Matyora expressed satisfaction with the project’s progress, stating that the pilot phase is yielding positive results. The online border management system uses biometric passports and automated identity verification to streamline immigration procedures.

This system is expected to significantly reduce congestion at busy border posts and international airports, while improving efficiency and curbing illegal activities such as human and drug trafficking, as well as money laundering. The e-gates will allow travelers to scan their passports, provide facial or fingerprint data, and undergo identity verification without manual checks.
