Zimbabwe is finalising the rolling out of an AI-powered traffic management system to improve road safety and reduce accidents, this innovative system uses advanced field devices like speed and red-light violation detection cameras to automatically identify traffic offenses.
The system can detect violations, issue fines, and initiate legal proceedings without human intervention and It will be linked to the Central Vehicle Registry (CVR) and automatic number-plate recognition technology for real-time vehicle owner identification.
The Permanent Secretary in Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Ambassador Raphael Faranisi remarked that the system will be rolled out countrywide in three phases.
Phase One will be Harare and Bulawayo metropolitan provinces, Phase Two Gweru, Masvingo, and Mutare and Phase Three Remaining provinces.
The government is also the upgrading road infrastructure and aligning laws to support the smart traffic management system. This move aims to streamline traffic enforcement, enhance road safety, and efficiently handle traffic offenses.
