Econet Wireless has updated its airtime credit loan recovery framework, effectively sealing technical workarounds previously used by subscribers to bypass debt repayments.

Historically, consumers carrying unpaid airtime credit loans were able to avoid automated system deductions by purchasing data or voice bundles through third-party lines or via EcoCash and directing them to their own numbers. This workaround permitted users to utilize mobile services without clearing their outstanding balances.

Under the newly patched system, Econet automatically intercepts incoming bundle purchases originating from secondary numbers or EcoCash platforms if the recipient line carries an active debt. The system instantly deducts the outstanding loan balance from the incoming transaction before applying any remaining funds toward the requested bundle.

For instance, if a debtor owing $1.15 attempts to receive a $0.30 bundle from another device, the network first recovers the $0.30 debt, notifying the subscriber that $0.85 remains

Subscribers across social media platforms have reported experiencing these sudden automated deductions, often discovering the system change only after receiving official SMS notifications confirming debt reimbursements instead of bundle activations.

Reports within various online communities also indicate instances where subscribers believe the network deducted amounts exceeding their initial credit debt.

To date, Econet has not issued an official public statement detailing the modifications to its credit recovery architecture.

Consequently, current insights into the updated mechanism rely on widespread customer testimonies and online reports.

Public reaction across social platforms has been varied, with many users responding with lighthearted humor regarding the network’s stringent debt retrieval methods, while acknowledging that the update represents a standard commercial measure to safeguard revenue.
