ZETDC Introduces Mandatory Inspection Fees for Generators

The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) has introduced mandatory inspection fees for electrical installations and generators. This development comes at a time when many Zimbabweans are turning to alternative energy sources due to rising electricity costs and persistent power outages.

Under the new regulations, owners of generators will be required to pay verification and safety inspection fees depending on the generator’s capacity. For units up to 100KW, the fee is set at $5.00, while those exceeding 100KW will attract a charge of $50.00. Additionally, ZETDC has introduced advanced safety inspection fees, which stand at $20.00 for generators below 100KW and $100.00 for those above that threshold. Prototype generators often used for experimental or custom-built energy solutions will be subject to a $100.00 inspection fee regardless of size.

With more Zimbabweans relying on diesel, petrol, solar, and wind-powered generators to cushion themselves against electricity shortages, the new fees are expected to impact a broad segment of consumers, from households to businesses. While ZETDC maintains that the inspections are necessary to prevent electrical hazards and ensure safe operation, some users may view the fees as an additional financial burden in an already challenging economic environment.

The shift toward alternative energy sources has accelerated in Zimbabwe due to increasing electricity tariffs and erratic power supply. Many households and businesses have invested heavily in backup power solutions to mitigate the effects of load shedding, making generator ownership more common than ever before. However, without proper regulation and safety standards, these power sources can pose significant risks, including fire hazards and electrical accidents.

ZETDC’s move signals a stronger push for compliance, safety, and accountability in the energy sector. However, whether the new fees will encourage safe power use or simply add to the financial strain of already struggling consumers remains to be seen. As the demand for alternative energy solutions continues to grow, the balance between regulation and affordability will be crucial in shaping Zimbabwe’s energy future.
