In a bid to curb the rampant copper vandalism plaguing the country’s telecommunications sector, TelOne Technical Director, Engineer Initial Mlambo, has advocated for a 20-year prison sentence for individuals convicted of copper theft.
Mlambo made the remarks during a plenary session at Tech Convergence Forum, hosted by Technomag on Friday, where industry experts and stakeholders gathered to discuss the latest trends and innovations in the tech sector.
Mlambo emphasized the devastating impact of copper theft on TelOne’s operations and the broader economy. He urged the government to take a stronger stance against copper vandalism and impose harsher penalties more than the current ten years jail term to deter would-be offenders.
” We need to lobby for 20 years or more for copper vandalism so that the penalty becomes a deterrent”, he said.
Mlambo’s call for tougher penalties on copper vandalism resonated with attendees, highlighting the need for collective action to address this critical issue.
