ITU Director Zavazava Back Home, Updates Ministry.

The recently appointed Director for Development at the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Dr Cosmas Zavazava is back in Zimbabwe  where today, the Minister of ICT, Postal & Courier Services, Hon Tatenda Mavetera welcomed him in a courtesy call at the Ministry’s offices.

Zavazava  has been Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)  since the 1 January 2023 after winning the campaign trail, to lend the top 5th international  position in the global telecommunication organisation.

ITU is the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies (ICTs). The Organization is made up of a membership of 194​ Member States and more than 1000 companies, universities and international and regional organizations.

The meeting was also attended the ministry’s top chiefs including Honourable D. Phuthi, the Deputy Minister, and Dr. B. Chirume, the Permanent Secretary and the meeting deliberated on

Collaborative Initiatives: Both parties explored potential partnerships aimed at enhancing ICT infrastructure and services across Zimbabwe.
Sustainable Development: Dr. Zavazava highlighted the critical role of technology in achieving sustainable development and fostering economic growth.
Zimbabwe’s ICT Landscape: Minister Mavetera provided insights into the current state of ICT in Zimbabwe, detailing recent advancements while also acknowledging ongoing challenges.
Investment Environment: The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to creating a favorable environment for investment in telecommunications infrastructure, emphasizing its importance in the journey towards a digital economy by 2030.

The visit was noted as a significant step towards strengthening international cooperation in ICT development, with both sides expressing optimism about future collaborations.

 

The top five officials of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) were elected by Member States from around the world during the organization’s 21st Plenipotentiary Conference (PP-22) in September and October 2022.​

Top leadership has Doreen Bogdan-Martin as the ITU Secretary-General​, Tomas Lamanauskas ITU Deputy Secretary-General​, Mario Maniewicz Director of the ITU Radiocommunication Bureau​, Seizo Onoe Director of the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Bureau and ​Cosmas Zavazava​​ Director of the ITU Telecommunication Development Bureau.
