Econet InfraCo Cuts Diesel Use 30% With AI Fuel Mode, Built on Cassava’s NVIDIA Supercomputer

Econet InfraCo has become the first tower operator in the world to deploy AI to manage diesel consumption, cutting fuel use by 30% at a time Middle East conflict is pushing diesel prices to multi-year highs.

The solution, AI Fuel Mode, was developed jointly with sister company Cassava Compute, which operates Africa’s only NVIDIA AI supercomputer — the Cassava AI Factory in Cape Town.

It’s a World First For TowerCo As Diesel Becomes Single Largest Cost Line For Africa’s 500,000 Tower Generators.

Why It Matters: Diesel Is The TowerCo Margin

Africa’s mobile operators run more than 500,000 diesel generators to keep towers live due to grid failure and load shedding. For tower infrastructure companies, diesel is the single largest opex line — larger than rent, security or maintenance.

InfraCo’s parent previously disclosed energy costs as the biggest driver of its 2025 cost base. A 30% cut therefore moves directly to EBITDA for a company now valued at $691m on the VFEX after its March listing by introduction.

How It Works:

Cassava Compute ingested 3 years of generator telemetry — run-hours, load, fuel burn rate, grid availability, site traffic, temperature and refuelling cycles — across InfraCo’s national portfolio.

The team built an AI fuel management matrix that predicts:

1. When grid will drop at site level
2. When battery state-of-charge is sufficient to avoid generator start
3. When to run generator at optimal load vs low-load idle burn

The matrix then auto-dispatches generator start/stop instructions, shifting from reactive diesel use to predictive dispatch. Result: 30% less diesel burned for the same network uptime.

What Is Next:

Cassava AI says AI Fuel Mode will be commercialised to third-party tower operators — Helios, American Tower, IHS — facing the same diesel exposure across Africa.

A second product, AI Energy Mode, is in deployment with Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, applying the same optimization logic to grid electricity consumption on the active network side.

Both platforms drive GPU demand back to Cassava’s own factory — a closed loop: Cassava AI Factory provides compute to build fuel-saving models, fuel-saving models prove commercial case for AI Factory GPUs to mining and manufacturing clients.

For InfraCo, which just separated from Econet Wireless to operate as a standalone TowerCo, the AI deployment is its first post-split product proof-point — not just steel and diesel, but infrastructure intelligence as a service.
