Zimbabwean top cop Assistant Inspector Simbarashe Mandizvidza who earlier was the subject of a nationwide manhunt after allegedly disappearing from Police General Headquarters (PGHQ) in Harare on August 13 with a stolen Ford Ranger bearing police colours vehicle has been described as mentally disturbed by commentator’s while the ZRP confirmed he is now in police custody.
A police internal memo reportedly ordered stations in Mashonaland Central to mount roadblocks to intercept the vehicle, which was believed to be in the province and yet within hours, videos emerged on WhatsApp, Facebook and most social media showing Mandizvidza in uniform, claiming to have done a coup d’etat on the ZRP and giving Chinese nationals “48 hours” to leave the country.
“Regrettably our relationship with the Zimbabwean public has not always been ideal,” Mandizvidza said in one video.
“For any harm or mistrust caused during the execution of our duties I wish to offer our sincere apology.
“As of today, the ZRP are committed to serving the people… In line with recent developments, I am announcing that I will be taking charge of ZRP with immediate effect with a focus to empowering young officers to lead and drive positive change within the organisation and country at large.”
The seemingly mentally disturbed officer claimed to be employed as the Member in Charge Senior Officers Desk at PGHQ.
Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the officer’s conduct was treasonous warning the public not to be misled by his messages.
The so called Assistant Inspector Mandizvidza was taken into custody yesterday in Harare under unclear circumstances with ZRP confirming it is continuing investigations into the alleged theft of the police vehicle and the “treasonous utterances,” he
is expected to face multiple charges on.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police disowned the Assistant Inspector , arresting the rogue police officer
ZRP disowns, arrests rogue police officer and categorically disassociating itself from his treasonous social media videos and statements he issued.
Deemed errant following his arrest, Mandizvidza faces both disciplinary charges under the Police Act [Chapter 11:10] and criminal proceedings.
Commissioner- General of Police Stephen Mutamba assured the public that the Zimbabwe Republic Police will continue serving the people of Zimbabwe and the country ‘s leadership in line with the tenets of the ZRP’s constitutional mandate.
Commenting on the same matter outspoken government critic, award winning journalist @Daddy Hope” Hopewell Chin’ono posted the top cop stating the policeman must be mentally disturbed and a whole police force must seek medical help for their colleague instead of denigrating him.
Chin’ono deplored a lack of character exhubed by those meant to protect their own posting on his Facebook the following:
“The lack of compassion and empathy by the Zimbabwe Republic Police towards Inspector Mandizvidza is striking, but not surprising, because we have become a nation that does not show compassion towards each other at many levels, especially in politics.
“This man needs medical help, not persecution. It is embarrassing that an entire police force is gloating about arresting him and telling the public how it is going to punish him.”
The award winning journalist added, “It is embarrassing that ZRP has failed to see that their colleague needs medical help, not jackboot tactics.
“Arikurwara, and we treat those in that situation with compassion. Instead of bragging about how it will fix him, ZRP should be getting medical help for him. Have some emotional intelligence ZRP”
