By ICT Postal And Courier Services minister Hon Jenfan Muswere has provoked young ICT innovators gathered today in Bulawayo to become more innovative or risk being redundant.
Addressing the techies during the Potraz 2020 hackathon challenge running under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals SDGs, the minister said,
“Director General, it was you who reminded us, during the POTRAZ Strategic Planning Workshop, held in Mutare two weeks ago, that the stone-age did not end because we ran out of stones. By the same token I would like to echo the words of Ahmed Zaki Yamani, who was the Minister of Oil for Saudi Arabia for more than twenty years, who said, and I quote, “the oil age will end long before the world runs out of oil” unquote. Indeed, the rise of the electric car means that there will come a time when more drivers will get their energy from the grid than the gas station”.
He said this to emphasise on the need for local players to become pro active and creative arpund producing bespoke solutions using technology
Zimbabwe ICT players have been presented with a funding opportunity for their various ICT related products and 12 applicants today are battling it out for the top price.
There is need for local players t come out and commercialise their various projects hence the government through Potraz has invited applicants for funding and today is looking into selecting the best of the pitches%
53 applicants had responded to this cal l for entry across the nation and these various players have converged for the grand hackathon
The hackthon is searching for individuals or collectives with ideas around ICTs that will offer sustainable solutions to the socio-economic challenges that the country is likely to face beyond COVID-19.
It was open for all Zimbabweans who are passionate about technology and innovation.
