Zimpost has launched a drone delivery service in a move aimed at using technology to improve postal services, particularly in hard-to-reach rural areas.
The service was launched on Saturday, October 10, at Bambadzi Shopping Centre in Bulilima District, Matabeleland South, in partnership with Drone Solutions.
During the launch, a drone made a demonstration flight carrying a parcel from Bambadzi Shopping Centre to Masendu Digital Centre, highlighting the potential for more flexible delivery options.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Tatenda Mavetera said “innovation must deliver tangible benefits to communities.”
She commended Zimpost, Drone Solutions and the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe for the initiative, but said “aviation approvals, safety, reliability and cost must guide any expansion.”
Minister Mavetera said “where medical deliveries are proposed, relevant health authorities must be involved,” adding that “every new technology must prove its value to the community.”
Zimpost Postmaster General Maxwell Chitendeni said “the launch marked a new chapter for the organisation and was not just about launching a drone but about opening new possibilities.”
He said “the initiative shows Zimpost’s willingness to use technology to complement traditional delivery systems, explore faster and more flexible logistics solutions and improve access to communities.”
Chitendeni said “the organisation also plans to use artificial intelligence in its distribution network, with algorithms to help determine the best delivery routes in cities.”
He said the “launch in Bambadzi sends a clear message that innovation must not remain in major cities but must reach rural communities as well.” He said the “smart post office concept is a national initiative meant to benefit both urban and rural areas.”
He said Zimpost cannot transform alone and will need partnerships with government, regulators, technology companies, financial institutions, businesses, farmers and small and medium enterprises.
The event was attended by ICT Deputy Minister Dingumuzi Phuti, ICT permanent secretary Beulah Chirume, Headman Mbimba and Universal Services Fund executive director Kennedy Dewera, among others.
Zimpost said the organisation has always adapted to change and must embrace opportunities presented by technology, e-commerce, automation and drones as they reshape the economy.
