WhatsApp has reiterated its core promise — voice and video calls with no time limits or paywalls — as part of its push to keep friends and family connected across borders.
In its latest update, the platform says: “Talk as long as you want for free. Stay close to friends and family wherever they are with voice and video calls that have no time limits or paywalls. Start a call from any chat or the Calls tab.”
For Zimbabwe, where diaspora connectivity is a lifeline, the feature is critical. Unlike traditional telecom billing or other apps that cap free calls at 40-60 minutes, WhatsApp calls remain fully free and unlimited, using only data or Wi-Fi.
What it means for users:
No time limits: No cut-off at 60 minutes, even for group calls.
No paywalls: No premium subscription needed for long calls.
Anywhere access: Start from any chat thread or directly from the Calls tab.
End-to-end encrypted: All calls remain private and secure.
For telcos like NetOne, TelOne, and Liquid, this reinforces the data-as-voice shift. As Zimbabwe accelerates digital transformation under the #CyberStrongZimbabwe campaign launched at NUST, secure and trusted communication platforms that are free at point of use are driving digital inclusion.
The move comes as mobile money fraud and social engineering rise — WhatsApp is urging users to stay within the platform for calls and avoid unknown links offering “free airtime” or “call bonuses” that compromise accounts.
If you have data, you have unlimited talk time. No tokens, no extra charges — just open any chat, tap call, and talk.
