Homeowners frequently turn to WhatsApp groups, friends, relatives or personal contacts when they need repairs or construction work done which can take a long time to find.
Gadzira is a digital marketplace that connects homeowners with tradespeople looking for work.
The digital marketplace is designed to connect homeowners with skilled professionals through a structured process that allows users to describe their needs, receive responses and compare available service providers.
According to Gadzira founder Mujuru, the platform was developed around a common challenge faced by Zimbabweans: the country has skilled workers, but finding and reliably connecting them with people who need their services can be difficult.
Instead of relying entirely on personal recommendations or searching through contacts, users can post a job on the platform and allow interested professionals to respond.
“The idea behind Gadzira was straightforward. If you need something done, you post the job. If you have the skill, you find work,” Mujuru said.
The platform therefore brings two groups together — people who need work done and professionals who have the skills to do it.
How does Gadzira work?
The process begins when a homeowner needs a service.
For example, if a homeowner has a burst water pipe, they can post the job on Gadzira and provide information about what needs to be done, where the work is required and how much they are prepared to pay.
Tradespeople who are interested and available can then respond to the job.
The homeowner can review the professionals who have responded, look at their profiles and ratings, compare offers and decide who they want to work with.
The process also allows for discussion between the homeowner and the professional.
If an offer does not meet the homeowner’s expectations, the two parties can continue discussing the terms instead of ending the transaction immediately.
This means the platform is not simply a directory of phone numbers. It creates a process through which homeowners and professionals can communicate before agreeing on a job.
Trust and profiles
A good part of the platform is its approach to trust and vetting.
For homeowners, finding a tradesperson is not only about obtaining a telephone number. They also need information that can help them decide who to hire.
Gadzira allows users to review professional profiles and ratings before making their choice.
This gives homeowners information to consider when comparing different service providers, rather than relying only on a forwarded contact or an informal recommendation.
The platform’s marketplace model also gives tradespeople the opportunity to decide which jobs they want to respond to and negotiate the terms of the work.
Where can users find Gadzira?
Gadzira is currently available for Android users through the Google Play Store.
The developers also plan to expand the application to iOS, although the iOS version is still under development.
This means Android users can currently access the platform through their smartphones, while iPhone and iPad users will have to wait for the planned iOS expansion.
What problem is Gadzira trying to solve?
At its core, Gadzira is focused on the gap between available skills and people who need those skills.
Zimbabwe has plumbers, electricians, builders and other tradespeople, but the challenge for customers can be identifying who is available, suitable and trustworthy.
At the same time, skilled professionals can struggle to find customers outside their existing networks.
Gadzira attempts to bring both sides of that equation onto one platform.
As Mujuru explained, the purpose is not simply to introduce another application, but to use technology to organise an activity Zimbabweans are already doing.
“Zimbabwe needs useful solutions to ordinary problems. Technology simply gives us another way of organising what we are already doing,” he said.
For homeowners, that means having a digital place to post a job, receive responses, compare professionals and negotiate terms.
For tradespeople, it provides a platform where they can discover potential jobs and choose which opportunities to pursue.
Gadzira therefore operates as a digital meeting point between demand for household services and the professionals who provide them.
