A Zimbabwean technology company, Omorfo Tech Labs is giving young people an opportunity to learn valuable digital skills through its technology education programmes, as the country continues to see growing demand for young people who can participate in the digital economy.
Omorfo Tech Labs focuses on technology solutions as well as education. The company says its mission is to make technology more accessible while helping businesses and individuals use digital tools to solve problems and create new opportunities.
One of its key programmes is Digital Teens, an initiative designed for children and teenagers between the ages of 7 and 20. The programme introduces young learners to coding fundamentals, digital design and technology entrepreneurship.
Rather than simply teaching children how to use computers and smartphones, the programme is designed to help them understand how technology works and how they can use it to create their own solutions. Students are given opportunities to work on practical projects while developing skills that could become useful in their future education and careers.
Omorfo Tech says it has already reached more than 20,000 students and partnered with more than 32 schools. The figures demonstrate the scale of its efforts to introduce technology education to young Zimbabweans.
The company’s approach is important at a time when digital skills are becoming increasingly valuable. Young people are growing up in a world where computers, artificial intelligence, mobile applications, online businesses and other technologies are becoming part of everyday life.
For children, learning technology at an early age can provide more than just computer knowledge. Coding can encourage problem solving and logical thinking, while digital design can help learners develop creativity. Technology entrepreneurship can also introduce young people to the idea of creating businesses and using technology to address problems in their communities.
Omorfo Tech also runs programmes aimed at educators and professionals. Its Digital Youth Forum provides specialised training to help educators and professionals incorporate technology into classrooms and workplaces.
The company has also been involved in robotics education. Its events include the Robotics for Good Youth Challenge, which gives young innovators an opportunity to build robots designed to solve real community problems. Omorfo Tech has hosted the Zimbabwean edition of the challenge and says the programme provides young people with an opportunity to compete internationally.
Another recent initiative listed by the company is its Digital Teens Fun Tech Week August Bootcamp, held at Zimpost Head Office. Such programmes give young learners an opportunity to spend time learning and experimenting with technology outside the traditional classroom environment.
The impact of initiatives like these could extend beyond individual students. By introducing children to coding, robotics and digital creativity, Zimbabwe can develop a generation that is not only able to consume technology but also capable of creating it.
For many young Zimbabweans, access to technology education can be a stepping stone towards careers in software development, engineering, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, digital design and entrepreneurship.
Omorfo Tech’s work therefore highlights an important part of Zimbabwe’s digital future: giving children the skills and confidence to become creators of technology rather than only users of it.
