NetOne’s transformation under GCEO Engineer Raphael Mushanawani focuses on digital inclusion where the telcos is a strategic enabler of Vision 2030.

“We have focused on expanding connectivity, driving digital inclusion, modernising infrastructure, enhancing customer experience, and positioning technology as a catalyst for economic empowerment,” he said in a pull aside intervie after emerging the most successful CEO in the country. The CEO measures success by societal impact. “Every connected school, every digitally empowered entrepreneur, every rural community brought into the digital ecosystem represents meaningful progress.” Telecommunications must unlock potential.

He views NetOne’s role through Vision 2030. “Our responsibility is to build the digital infrastructure that supports productivity, innovation, and competitiveness. As Zimbabwe advances towards Vision 2030, NetOne remains committed to accelerating digital transformation.”

Government support has been critical. Under President Mnangagwa, Mushanawani said Zimbabwe placed “significant emphasis on innovation, industrialisation, and digital transformation.” That policy environment enabled NetOne’s investments.

The Mutapa Investment Fund also shaped governance. “Under Dr. John Mangudya, there has been strong emphasis on ensuring national assets operate efficiently, sustainably, and contribute meaningfully to economic development.” Accountability drove performance.

Mushanawani sees convergence with media as key. As a Zimpapers board member, he gained insight on how “digital platforms are transforming the way information is produced, distributed, and consumed.” Telco + media = digital empowerment.

The future is AI, IoT, and cloud. “Our focus is to ensure Zimbabwe is not merely a consumer of technology but an active participant in the digital economy. NetOne will continue investing in innovation and future-ready infrastructure.”

For him, success isn’t financial alone. “Financial performance is important because it enables sustainability, but true success is reflected in the positive contribution we make to society.”
